A new exhibit at Pearl S. Buck International shares the stories of Jewish communities in China over millennia. These stories intrigued Pearl S. Buck and Show More...her husband Richard Walsh so much that each explored them in their published works. Ms. Buck wrote the novel "Peony" and the play "Flight into China" on the subject. Mr. Walsh included scholarly articles about the topic in his publication, "Asia" magazine.
Jews settled in China as tradespeople on the silk road. They had strong communities and became part of society. One of the largest communities was in K'aifeng. A stele (stone tablet) commemorates the construction of a synagogue there in 1163, but by the 1850s there were only remnants of the building standing and most families had assimilated.
Part of the exhibit at Pearl S. Buck International is a retelling, through words and photos, of one Jewish family's flight from Nazi Germany into China. Packed in the luggage was a copy of "The Good Earth" which descendants presume was carried so far in order to become part of a lending library established during their stay in China.

History, music and poetry will touch your soul with Pulitzer Prize wining author Frank McCourt's
play The Irish...and How They Got That Way. This ballad-filled Show More...musical walk through the
tumultuous 20th century and into the 21st century is a tribute to all things Irish and the Irish
American immigration experience. Its' sometimes irreverent, but always affectionate sentiment
and irony seem to weave a comforting Irish sweater around your heartstrings. You will hear
classic and favorites alike: Danny Boy; Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ra; Finnegan's Wake; Over There;
and You're a Grand Old Flag. The last two songs are written and composed by the ultimate Irish
immigrant success story, George M. Cohan. An all-enveloping sensation of "being there" will
take you back to sparse and meager times of struggle and triumph. With this production, Bucks
County's own Broadway Producer, Howard Perloff, inaugurates a three-production series as part
of the newly established Bucks County Center of the Performing Arts, Inc. a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit.
Ticket sales and donations will lay the groundwork to build the first bricks and mortar

In 1970, the Museum of Modern Art challenged the then-popular notion that photographs were "taken rather than made" in the genre-expanding exhibition Show More...Photography into Sculpture. Curator Peter Bunnell highlighted artists ranging from the physicality of alternative chemical processes to three dimensional works on unusual substrates. Since then, a heightened exploration of the final object or form the photographic image takes has become an increasingly expressive pursuit for artists, with some photographers now working primarily in sculpture and installation.

The exhibition will begin with an exploration of Sheeler's early period of experimentation: photographs of the Worthington House and modern sculpture, Show More...early portraits, and his 1920 film collaboration with Paul Strand, Manhatta. The core of Charles Sheeler: Fashion, Photography, and Sculptural Form, however, are the 85 portraits and fashion photographs on loan from the Condé Nast archives in New York. These photographs embody all the glamour of the Jazz Age-beautiful starlets in fantastic gowns and fabulous jewels, models wearing the latest in couture designs, Ziegfeld Follies dancers, and stage actors featured in the latest Broadway sensation. A number of these photographs will be included in staged, multi-media vignettes incorporating period costumes, additional photographs, and paintings on loan from The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Yale University Art Gallery, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Gaston Lachaise Foundation, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Additionally, visitors will see for the first time Sheeler's own textile designs, which he produced in the early 1930s. These will be accompanied by a photograph Sheeler took of his dealer, Edith Halpert, wearing a dress made from his textiles, standing between two of his recent industrial paintings. Pieces of the original dress, as well as a recreation of it, will also be included in one of the multi-media vignettes.. ...Show Less

McCoole's Arts & Events Place will present "The Ghost Army Event," celebrating the top-secret WWII deception unit that duped the Nazis, Saturday, June Show More...3, from 6 - 9 pm and Sunday, June 4, from 2 - 5 pm.
Each day's events include a screening of the award-winning PBS documentary The Ghost Army, a chance to meet veterans of the unit, and a Ghost Army exhibit that features a life-size inflatable Sherman tank.
The Ghost Army was officially known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops. From June 1944 to March 1945, it staged 20 battlefield deceptions, beginning in Normandy and ending along the Rhine River. The deceivers employed hundreds of inflatables (tanks, trucks, jeeps, airplanes), sound trucks, phony radio transmissions and even playacting to fool the enemy. Their brilliant deceptions saved thousands of lives.
Among those appearing will be Rick Beyer and Elizabeth Sayles, authors of the New York Times best seller The Ghost Army of World War II. (There will be a book signing each day.) Ghost Army veterans Bernie Mason (from Philadelphia) and John Jarvie (from Kearny New Jersey), both of whom are featured in the film and book, will answer questions after the screenings. Other special guests are also expected.
This event honors Ghost Army veteran John Kennedy, who was from Quakertown. It is the brainchild of his daughter, Lynn Kennedy, who will also be in attendance. It is being presented with the generous support of the Quakertown Historical Society and McCoole's Arts & Events.
Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for senior admission. A cash bar will be available. For tickets and more information, please visit www.mccoolesredlioninn.com
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Ghost Army Legacy Project, which is lobbying Congress to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the unit.

Exhibit Hours:
Mon-Fri 8:30 to 5:00
Saturday 10:30 to 3:00
Sunday 12:30 to 3:00

Each of the Lotus Land band members - Chris Nelson, Bob Chartrand and Mark Dalton - has had their

History, music and poetry will touch your soul with Pulitzer Prize wining author Frank McCourt's
play The Irish...and How They Got That Way. This ballad-filled Show More...musical walk through the
tumultuous 20th century and into the 21st century is a tribute to all things Irish and the Irish
American immigration experience. Its' sometimes irreverent, but always affectionate sentiment
and irony seem to weave a comforting Irish sweater around your heartstrings. You will hear
classic and favorites alike: Danny Boy; Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ra; Finnegan's Wake; Over There;
and You're a Grand Old Flag.
Ticket sales and donations will lay the groundwork to build the first bricks and mortar
comprehensive arts venue and school serving the Bucks and Montgomery Counties. Look for
Give My Regards to Broadway in June and July, and My Fair Lady in August! Running May 24

8TH ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL

The 8th annual Environmental Film Festival will include two short films and one feature film as well as a question and answer period with the feature Show More...film director, Jared Flesher. Jared is an award-winning reporter, photojournalist, and documentary filmmaker. He has directed three documentary films that have screened at film festivals around the world: The Farmer and the Horse, Sourlands, and Field Biologist. Jared is also the director of the documentary web series The Creature Show.

The feature film, Field Biologist, is the story of 22-year-old Tyler Christensen, a talented but underemployed high school graduate from New Jersey still trying to figure out what to do with his life. Tyler's great love is being outside, chasing birds, and studying wildlife. One day he decides to drop everything and travel to Costa Rica to start doing his own conservation-oriented research on birds in the tropics. Tyler's adventure takes him from the cloud forests of Monteverde to the mangrove swamps of the Nicoya Peninsula, culminating in a plan to try to help save the highly endangered mangrove hummingbird. The film presents the major challenges facing biodiversity on Earth-climate change and habitat destruction chief among them-while also raising some fundamental questions: What makes someone a scientist? How important is a formal education? What risks are worth taking? What should you do with your life?

The two short independent films of the night are Brilliant Darkness and Trees. Brilliant Darkness; was directed and written by Emily V. Driscoll. This beautiful film explores the importance of darkness, and the erosion of it, through the study and preservation of firefly habitats in Japan and the U.S. The second film; Trees, is a comic animated warning about the devastating effects of clear cutting by director Randy Wakerlin.

The films will be shown in Schiff's Woodbadge Lodge, which is transformed into a woodland theater each year for this special event. Festival attendees may choose to walk from the Nature Center at 339 Pleasant Valley Road in Mendham along marked trails to the theater location, which is a gentle two-mile, or 20-minute, hike or take one of two complementary hay rides leaving from the Nature Center starting at 6 pm and again at 6:30pm. Starting at 6 pm filmgoers are invited to join us for light dinner fare, enjoyed al fresco on our picnic tables available for a (suggested) donation. Movie snacks & drinks will also be available at movie time. For those who might like additional conversation and community, coffee, and dessert will be enjoyed by the firepit at the conclusion of the evening.

This event has been generously sponsored by the following organizations and businesses; The Willow School of Gladstone, Mammoth Tree of Long Valley, Jockey Hollow Dentistry of Mendham, Mikula Web Solutions, Headquarters Financial Group of Morristown, Shoprite of Chester, Sunrise Milk of Clinton, Cheech's Own Coffee Company of Somerville, and Black River Roaster of Whitehouse.

Exhibit Hours:
Mon-Fri 8:30 to 5:00
Saturday 10:30 to 3:00
Sunday 12:30 to 3:00

History, music and poetry will touch your soul with Pulitzer Prize wining author Frank McCourt's
play The Irish...and How They Got That Way. This ballad-filled Show More...musical walk through the
tumultuous 20th century and into the 21st century is a tribute to all things Irish and the Irish
American immigration experience. Its' sometimes irreverent, but always affectionate sentiment
and irony seem to weave a comforting Irish sweater around your heartstrings. You will hear
classic and favorites alike: Danny Boy; Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ra; Finnegan's Wake; Over There;
and You're a Grand Old Flag.
Ticket sales and donations will lay the groundwork to build the first bricks and mortar
comprehensive arts venue and school serving the Bucks and Montgomery Counties. Look for
Give My Regards to Broadway in June and July, and My Fair Lady in August! Running May 24
through June 4, 2017 with performances on Wednesday 7:30pm, Thursday 2pm, Friday 8pm,

Celebrating Catherine Jansen's groundbreaking cyanotype installation The Blue Room and works from Photography into Sculpture artist Bea Nettles from the Michener Art Museum collection, this exhibit surveys regional contemporaries continuing to diversify the forms photography now embodies.. ...Show Less
